Museu Hebraico Sahar Hassamaim – Portas do Céu (Sinagoga)

The ‘Sahar Hassamain’ Synagogue, which may mean Gates of Heaven, was brought back to life and inaugurated in 2015 as a cultural and museological space. It stands out as the oldest Hebrew temple in Portugal, built after the expulsion of the Jews from the country, and one of the few vestiges of Hebrew culture in the Azores archipelago. It was founded by Abraham Bensaude together with other members of the Jewish community living in Ponta Delgada in the year 1836. Besides being a temple, it also served as the rabbi’s residence.
