Homage to Firefighters
From the nineteenth century onwards, Ponta Delgada began to have a more active urban life, which led to the need to have a firefighters’ service. It was in 1839, under the leadership of councilman Manuel Teixeira Soares, that the first three fire stations were created. On August 5, 1879, the Ponta Delgada Volunteer Firefighters Association was founded as the result of a meeting between the President, one of the city councilmen of Ponta Delgada and a group of citizens. This is a tribute from the local community to those who dedicate their lives to helping others.
The statue was made by Raposo de França.
