Professor Luís Athayde

Luís Bernardo Leite d'Ataíde was born in Ponta Delgada on April 25, 1883, having died on June 17, 1955. He studied Law at the University of Coimbra. He devoted himself to the study of Azorean art history and ethnography, bequeathing a vast cultural work. It was on his initiative that the Autonomous Council of Ponta Delgada acquired the Santo André Convent to become the Carlos Machado Museum.

In 1921 he was elected parliament member for the constituency of Ponta Delgada, being an active figure in the reformulation of the Azorean autonomy.
