Afonso Chaves
Francisco Afonso de Chaves, also known as Coronel Afonso Chaves, was born on January 24, 1857, in Lisbon, and died on June 26, 1926, in Ponta Delgada. He dedicated his life to Meteorology, Geophysics and Zoology. His outstanding career as a teacher, director and founder of several institutions, gives him a prominent place the History of the Azores, particularly in the field of meteorology, making him a pioneer in the application of scientific knowledge in the Azores.
In 1932, several illustrious Azorean figures of the twentieth century founded the Afonso Chaves Society, with the mission of giving continuity to the study areas he had devoted.
The bronze bust was made by Numidico Bessone.
