Gonçalo Velho Cabral

The dates of his birth and death are uncertain. However, he lived in the fifteenth century, possibly having died in 1460. He was a navigator, a Knight of the House of Prince Henry and the first Donatary Captain of the islands of Santa Maria and São Miguel, being also responsible for the settlement of the same islands in the fifteenth century. The sculpture is by José Fragoso (1913) and has been in the square since October 21, 1956.
