Homage to Pilgrims
The penitent pilgrimage of the men of the island of São Miguel dates back to 1522, when, in the early hours of October 22, a great earthquake struck Vila Franca do Campo, partially buried it and killed an undefined amount of the population. After the tragedy, the survivors began to go in pilgrimage to a hermitage under the invocation of Our Lady. Later, the pilgrimage was extended to other churches and hermitages dedicated to the Virgin, eventually covering all of the altars to Our Lady in the island of San Miguel. The pilgrimages take place during Lent, lasting seven days whether there is sun or rain. From all over the island, groups of men, brethren in pilgrimage, wearing simple attire, a walking stick to support the long walks, a shawl for warmth, a backpack to carry food, and a rosary for company. It is a huge manifestation of faith, being part of the tradition and local identity.
The statue is by Catarina Alves.
