Hebrew Cemetery – Campo da Saudade – Parish of Santa Clara

The Hebrew Cemetery - Campo da Saudade, was created in 1834, as the book of deeds of the Municipal Council of Ponta Delgada shows. However, there are records of tombstones prior to 1834, namely one dating from 1826 with the name of Jacob Bensaude, proving that this area was already used for burials of the Jewish community residing in St. Michael before the registration.

The Hebrew Cemetery has about 160 tombstones organized in no particular manner, non-chronologically and not by families. An exceptional case is that of Erna Friedman, wife of Dr Friedman, who died in Lisbon but wanted to have her ashes rest in Ponta Delgada forever.
