Parish Church of São Sebastião — Mother Church of Ponta Delgada – Parish of São Sebastião

It’s one of the emblematic monuments of the city and underwent several interventions and styles in different epochs, but the most striking are the Manueline and the Baroque, visible on the gates, altars and ceilings inside.

Throughout the ages, this church underwent profound remodeling: the first in the 18th century, on the frontispiece; the second in the 19th century, in the surrounding area and the third in the 20th century, giving it its current physiognomy.

The Church of São Sebastião is the guardian of a remarkable sacred art treasure, with special reference to the statuary, gold objects and garments, namely two dalmatics and two chasubles of the 14th century, and others of the 15th century. In the 19th century, António Joaquim Nunes da Silva, a wealthy local merchant, offered the city a clock to be placed at the top of the tower, which is now a symbol of Ponta Delgada besides having been for more than 100 years the time reference.
