Fountain of Largo da Igreja – Fajã de Baixo

The beautiful public fountain that decorates the eastern side of Largo da Igreja was inaugurated on October 16, 1816, as seen in the existing inscription. Above the spout was a poem of homage to Corregidor João de José da Veiga (the highest ranking authority of that time).

The construction of this monument resulted from a petition directed by Morgado Agostinho Cymbron in 1785 to Queen Maria I. On March 25, 1988, the Post Office of Portugal issued a series of four stamps with fountains from the Azores, including this fountain in a drawing by José Cândido and with the face value of 25 escudos.
