José Honorato Medeiros
José Honorato Gago da Câmara Medeiros was born in Ponta Delgada on May 19, 1906, and died in Lisbon on May 8, 1979. Due to his family ties (great-grandson) to the 2nd Viscount of Botelho, José Bento Botelho de Gusmão, King Manuel II allowed him the title of 3rd Viscount of Botelho. He graduated in Civil Engineering at the University of Gent (1926) and the École Supérieur de l'Electricité of Paris (1928). In Portugal, he held various positions in the merchant navy. Between 1929 and 1936, he was the chief engineer of the Naval Shipyard of the Port of Lisbon and administrator of the Companhia da Navegação Carregadores Açorianos, a position he held from 1943 to 1972. He was responsible for the foundation of several shipyards and collaborated with several national and international shipping institutions, including representation and consulting positions. On behalf of the Portuguese government, he was a diplomat at NATO, in matters related to International Maritime Law. Due to being a Chamberlain of the Cape and Sword of the Holy See, he represented the Vatican on several occasions. José Honorato de Medeiros received numerous national and international awards and bequeathed a vast bibliography with more than 30 books addressing professional, political and historical issues. José Honorato Medeiros was an Azorean of the World, the title of his memoirs.
